Still Life

A still life I painted last quarter in class. There were several items on the table, and we sat in a semicircle around the table. I chose the Gallo Bottle, (because I love to paint reflective objects), the column, and flower which sat between them both. I felt that the painting (watercolor), would have been too static if I placed the objects vertically on the paper, so I tilted the whole piece to bring some life and movement.

For this painting I used:

Strathmore Watercolor cold press 140 lb. 11"x15".
Grumbacher Academy Brand paint.
Loew-Cornell #10 flat brush.
Staedtler #3 for the thin line work
Micron #8 for the heavier line work.

I started the painting with a sketch of the scene. With the background, I first layed down a thin layer of Cadmium Yellow Pale Hue with a #10 flat. While the background was drying, I started on the column. For the column, I layed down a lite layer of Cerulean Blue Hue for the shadow area. Next layed down several layers of gray (watered-down Black), letting each layer dry. With the rest of the column I left pure white, except of a few flashes of Cad yellow. I next added several layers of mixed varying amounts of Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, and Van Dyck Brown, Same with the bottle only not as many layer and a more diluted mixture. After the painting is fully dry, I then ink in the painting, and call it done.
